European Union needs urgent strategy for the European bison

On October 21, 2022, a team of scientists composed of: Kajetan Perzanowski, Daniel Klich, Wanda Olech published an article in the journal Conservation Letters entitled The European Union needs an urgent strategy for the European bison.

The authors identified the problem of a very uncertain future for Euroepan bison (wisent) as a result of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. They pointed out that currently more than half of the entire European bison population (50.4%) and almost two-thirds of the free-living population (61.8%) live in countries directly and indirectly involved in this conflict, i.e. Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Scientists called for the urgent development of a strategy for the protection of the species at the EU level.
